Budget Season: Evaluating Your Partners

Many administrators will be focused on building operational budgets for 2015 over the next couple of months.  If you are involved in this task, know that it is prime opportunity to assess your service line partners.  In order to ensure your budgeted dollars are used as efficiently as possible, you may consider asking the following questions:

  • Do I use the same group for all my service lines?  Are they truly experts in each speciality?  Would I achieve more savings by contracting with separate specialists in the individual anesthesia, radiology, hospitalist and emergency departments?
  • Do my partners help achieve the goals of our hospital?  Have they streamlined patient through-put?  Do they collaborate with the OR staff and surgeons to run an efficient schedule?
  • Is there money left on the table because my partners are not specialists in billing?  Would I potentially pay less (or no) subsidy if their billing resulted in increased collections?
  • Are my partners innovators?  Do they build services, programs or products that enable my hospital to offer an improved patient experience?  Can their service help recruit other specialists to my hospital in support of growth goals?

As you explore these questions with respect to your current anesthesia partner, feel free to ask us how we do things at MedStream.  Connect with us here to learn how we can help your hospital increase efficiency, grow case volume, reduce costs and improve the patient experience.
